Uzu Kyumeigan : Factory Tour
The Birthplace of the Renowned Traditional Pediatric Medicine
You can visit the Uzu Yakushido (a temple dedicated to the Buddha of Medicine) and Uzu Seiiken, both preserved since the Edo period, as well as the Uzu Historical Museum, which showcases the long history of Uzu Kyumeigan.
Uzu Kyumeigan, a famous herbal medicine for children, originated in Takanezawa Town (Kamitakanezawa) as a secret family formula passed down through the Uzu family, who served as local village headmen. By the late Edo period, its reputation had spread far beyond the Kanto region. Since the Meiji era, it became a household name across Japan through newspaper advertisements, cherished as an essential home remedy for soothing babies' night crying and irritability.
Even today, Uzu Kyumeigan continues to be manufactured right here in Takanezawa. Visitors are welcome to explore the historical museum and the Yakushido temple to discover the deep-rooted heritage of this medicine.
